Zibi Condominiums
Zibi is a vibrant 34-acre waterfront community that connects Ottawa and Gatineau. The community houses curated public spaces, residential and office buildings, and numerous walking and bike paths. As part of the community’s ongoing growth and corporate art collection, I was commissioned to create unique pieces of art, and I sought to explore the relationship between land, water and Indigenous storytelling. Take a look below to view these works.
“A Culture of Wealth,” is a diptych that reflects on the ways capitalism has influenced Inuit culture. In this work, Inuit myths, such as Sedna, are reinterpreted, while ancestors and spirits watch over the Inuit as they learn to process these influences and reconnect with their land amidst resource misuse and environmental degradation. Yet, all these resources remain part of the Inuit landscape, making them integral to the process of cultural (re)connection and reclamation.
The piece to the right was selected as a finalist for the Salt Spring National Art Prize, where it was exhibited in 2024 at Mahon Hall in Salt Spring Island, BC.
"A Land and its People," includes all Indigenous peoples and settlers in Canada. The vibrant strips on the left and right represent the diverse settler groups coexisting alongside Indigenous communities. I juxtapose modern development, such as Zibi’s residential and commercial buildings, with traditional Indigenous symbols like a tipi and an igloo.
